2026 Prescription Drug Discount Programs
Drug Discount Programs can be used as a self-pay option outside of your prescription drug plan in instances where your prescription is not covered by your insurance or the discount price is less than your insurance cost share. These discounts can save up to 80% or more on prescriptions and many have a high acceptance rate at national and local pharmacies. Remember, of course, that when you obtain a prescription not covered by your insurance, your cost can never be counted toward your Plan’s out-of-pocket maximum.
Most of the time, one wants to obtain prescriptions covered by insurance but there are exceptions. A recent experience of mine is a good example. A nurse practitioner in my dermatologist’s office prescribed a cream that is not in my plan’s formulary and I could see through my online portal that it was going to cost $233 at my local pharmacy.
I called the office back to ask about other drugs on the formulary but the staff suggested I try a different pharmacy they’d had great experience with getting non-formulary drugs covered. That pharmacy’s representative later told me they couldn’t get the drug covered by insurance, presumably because there are other cheaper generics, but they could use a coupon and the charge to me would be $75.
Because the dermatologist preferred this drug, I was willing to try it and pay $75 because it seemed unlikely a formulary exception would be granted. And, clearly, there’s a big difference between an out-of-pocket cost of $75 versus $233.
Below is a listing of commonly used Drug Discount Programs. Healthcare Navigation is not endorsing these programs, and we have no relationship with these companies financial or otherwise:
GoodRx: Probably the most well-known program with a network of over 70,000 pharmacies. They also include pet medications for those interested.
SingleCare: Often rated better than competitors for ease of use by seniors.
BuzzRx: Offers savings at over 60,000 pharmacies.
AARP Prescription: Free for members of AARP. Offers discounted prices in collaboration with OptumRx. Accepted at over 66,000 pharmacies.
Online mail order pharmacies for discounted Rx medications:
Amazon: Mail order discounted prescriptions with pharmacists on call 24/7.
CostPlus Drugs: Mark Cuban’s online pharmacy.
Savings under Discount Drug Programs are generally greatest for generic medications. The discounts for Brand medications offered through Drug Discount Programs are usually not quite as generous. If you need a Brand name medication outside of insurance, it’s best to contact the manufacturer directly to see what assistance they can provide. If the Brand is covered by your insurance but is still expensive, you can utilize manufacturer drug coupons to bring the cost down if available. However, these coupons cannot be used with Medicare Part D Drug plans.
Layers of gamesmanship and bureaucracy in the pharmacy benefits world has created opportunities for companies to offer a more direct means of purchasing medication. While we are thankful that people have found financial relief in affording their medications, the fact that it can be cheaper to purchase medication outside of insurance underscores the problems within our system.
