The Medicare GLP- 1 Bridge Program started July 1st, 2026 – Know What This Means for You

We are in an interesting era where GLP-1 weight loss drugs are concerned. On the one hand, we read that coverage of these drugs is breaking the budgets of insurers, large employer self-insured plans and state government programs which are limiting coverage of the drugs for obesity. Coverage for those with type 2 diabetes remains largely unaffected. At the same time, Medicare expanded coverage of the drugs for obesity on a temporary basis beginning July 1st 2026 through what is called the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program.

In order to qualify, you must have a BMI of 35 or over or 27 and over with certain comorbidities. Of course, to be eligible one also needs to be either on a Part D drug plan or a Medicare Advantage plan that covers drugs and most Advantage Plans include drug coverage. Until now, those on Medicare couldn’t qualify for these drugs unless they had a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes or weight related obstructive sleep-apnea. This is a very significant expansion of Medicare coverage for the drugs.

The program is temporary and is only approved to run through December 31st, 2027. If one qualifies, the monthly copayment is a mere $50 per month. This is likely great news for those who qualify but questionable news for taxpayers. We’ll see.

This temporary approach is intended to allow for evaluation of the effectiveness of GLP -1 drugs in improving health status. Honestly, we’re a bit skeptical that it’s too short a period for that to be possible and so often different studies yield different results. I recently read with amusement the many benefits of drinking coffee, for example (although not too much coffee, mind you).

In sum, if you are on Medicare and haven’t been able to qualify for GLP-1 drugs and couldn’t afford the out-of-pocket costs associated with these drugs, you should contact your physician soon if you think you may now be able to qualify under the Bridge Program. Many important questions remain about long term effects of GLP-1 but there is no doubt the drugs help with significant weight loss.
